Using Zoom more effectively for online supervision groups

25th June 2024 By Massimo Giannuzzi

Thursday 6th February / 2 hours / 6:30 to 8.30 / £50-£75

This course is now full

If you’d like to be added to the waiting list please complete this online form – just don’t make any payment.

If you’d like to receive a copy of the recording, it will be available after the event at a slightly reduced fee (as you’ll have missed the opportunity to try things out with us). The booking form allows you to express interest in this.

You will learn …

  • techniques, tips and ideas
  • how to make your sessions comfortable for you and your group
  • how to communicate clearly
  • how to create a sense of ease and flow
  • what does and doesn’t work so well online, why & what can we do about it
  • and together we will explore any challenges, questions and specific situations you bring

This will include …

  • The session atmosphere: Starting and endings; the “Waiting Room” vs “join beforehand”; creating a welcoming atmosphere; shared screen videos; using silence; duration of sessions & breaks.
  • Communication & interactions: How people see, hear and interact with each other online: requests to speak; a ‘round robin’ trick; working 1-2-1, in pairs, or as a group; using ‘Pin’ and ‘Spotlight’; making better eye contact.
  • How clear can you be?: visual and audio issues; zoom settings & equipment; what’s the best background?; tips for lighting and your internet quality.
  • Handling common issues: technical or joining problems; accessibility issues (e.g. subtitles for people with hearing impairments); people who prefer not to see themselves on screen.
  • Zoom set up tips: “repeating” links for each group you run; security options.

My website has help pages on many Zoom topics which will act as backup after the course.

The session will be recorded and available to all attendees (plus anyone who has paid, but unable to make this particular date).

Cannot make the date or course full?

If you cannot make the date or the course is full (maximum of 12 people), you can still book a place (use the booking form and payment links above) and you will receive a full recording of the event, plus relevant chat messages.
You will, of course, miss the opportunity to ask questions / discuss your own experience and needs / practice some of the tips and tricks.

Cancellation policy

For members of MSN: £15 is non-refundable / £35 is refundable up to 5 working days before / then £20 up to 24 hours before.
For non members: £15 is non-refundable / £60 is refundable up to 5 working days before / then £30 up to 24 hours before.

Optional topics

If there is enough interest in the group and (more crucially) if there is enough time we may be able to touch on one of the following topics.

  • Hybrid sessions: You run face to face groups and want to occasionally include someone on Zoom (a “hybrid” session).
  • Breakout Rooms: for fast paired sharing. This can be useful for the first few minutes of a session or to mix up the dynamic and pace of the session.
  • Presenting information: (e.g. a case study) to the group as documents or slideshows.
  • Gathering ideas as a group: everyone contributing to a single document – e.g. a shared whiteboard.
  • Gathering opinions in larger groups: Fast (15 second) “Yes/No/Maybe” voting as well as more detailed polling.
